How To Enter

Want to enter the HKS Drag Series?

Provided your car is built to specification and it runs competitive numbers then you can. Here’s what you need to do to check you comply:

Performance:
Because the HKS Drag Series is invitational, we only invite cars to run that are quick enough to be of interest to the crowd. Broadly speaking, that means cars built for PRO need to be running low 9’s or faster, cars built for STREET need to be running 11’s or faster, and FWD cars need to be running 12’s or faster.

We normally accept cars once they have already run the numbers. It’s not usually good enough to say “I think it will do an 11”. If you are a serious competitor, you will already know what the car is capable of before putting in an application.

Specification:
The first thing to bear in mind is what class you intend to run your car in. There are full specifications listed in the rulebook (available to download on the 08 Rules page) but a quick summary is as follows:

FWD – Front-wheel-drive cars with full street gear and unmodified chassis. Slicks allowed.

Street – Cars must be fully street legal, use an unmodified chassis and run on treaded tyres. Glass windows and finished interior required.

Factory Modified – Cars are allowed modified chassis (e.g. “back-half” conversion), slicks and more concessions to drag racing

Pro – Purpose-built drag cars with full-tube chassis allowed. Must have Jap body and engine.

All classes are governed by GSRs (General Safety Regulations) which become stricter the faster you go. Cars slower than 12 seconds need very little in the way of addition safety equipment.

Cars between 11.99 and 10.00 seconds need a roll-bar (sometimes referred to as a half-cage).

Cars between 9.99 and 8.50 seconds need a full roll cage.

Cars running faster than 8.50 seconds need more sophisticated cages/chassis determined by their terminal speeds.

Be aware that all rollcages need to be built to a recognised drag racing standard that takes into account wall-thickness, tube diameter, mounting points, welds etc. See the rulebook GSRs section for further info. We also recommend that you over-spec your car to make it future-proof (e.g. if you car is already running 10.1’s, don’t install a 10.0 cage, install an 8.5 cage).

If you need help with the safety rules, speak to one of the people in the Links page of the website for advice.

BEFORE HAVING ANY ROLL-CAGE INSTALLED, MAKE SURE THAT YOUR WELDER KNOWS THE SPECIFICATION FOR DRAG CAGES, INCLUDING TUBE DIAMETER AND WALL-THICKNESS. IT PAYS TO COMISSION AN EXPERIENCED DRAG CAR BUILDER FOR THIS WORK. See the Links page for approved builders.

Your car will be scrutineered at its first meeting, and you will be shown what it passes and fails on. All drivers in all classes will need a suitable firesuit, boots and helmet.

The races are invitational (no entry fees, and racers are allowed to run at the discretion of the organisers), but if you meet these standards, then the chances are you will be allowed to join the series. Simply drop us a line through the contact form and we’ll get you on the entry list.
